How Can Sleep Apnea Impact Your Sex Life?

Various researchers have conducted studies which demonstrate correlations between untreated sleep apnea and decreased sex drive, which can affect both men and women. Men may develop erectile dysfunction and women may develop female sexual dysfunction as a result.

Research has shown that when you treat your sleep apnea, it both “promotes better blood flow, and helps stimulate your sex drive” and indirectly treats “many of the underlying conditions linked to diminished sex drive and erectile dysfunction.” Properly diagnosing and treating your sleep apnea can prevent symptoms such as vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, decreased libido, and erectile dysfunction from worsening.

Where’s the Evidence?

A 2011 study included 80 females who completed questionaries about their sex lives, and “after investigation received a diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea.” The results of this study indicate that “female patients with obstructive sleep apnea had more sexual dysfunction” than those without OSA. Treating OSA may be the first step towards resolving issues with libido and sexual performance, as well as improving overall quality of life.

Erectile dysfunction in men with untreated sleep apnea is exceedingly common. One survey reported that “46% of sleep apnea patients had erectile dysfunction,” and “27% of the survey participants also noted that they had a low sex drive.” However, these do not have to be permanent issues. A separate study showed that “41% of men with sleep apnea and erectile dysfunction reported that their ED disappeared after using their CPAP device regularly.”

How Can This Impact Your Partner?

Your sleep apnea may not only affect your libido and sexual performance, but it can affect that of your partner as well. Your sleep disturbances may cause your partner to have a poorer quality of sleep, and when your partner is “irritable, tired and unhappy with the relationship, it can be difficult for you both to enjoy an active sex life.”
